Buildings with flat roof top surfaces from 25,000 to 65,000 square feet (sq.ft.) or more and which are reasonably shade-free represent ideal opportunities for installing a solar PV system. These systems will be oriented facing south and will have a peak power generating capacity between 100 kW and 250 kW. Roof tops with more than 100,000 sq.ft. may be candidates for larger capacities up to 500 kW. Buildings with slope roofs are also candidates for such installation provided they have large roof surfaces facing south.
Such systems are installed either ballasted with no roof penetration or, code or application requiring, attached to the structure. In such cases, the number of attachments would always be minimized and performed under warranty by roofing professionals to ensure a leak-free installation. In both cases, the installations are always insured to protect the landlord.
Because solar PV panels and their racking are made of lightweight materials, the static and wind loading impacts are kept to a minimum, and are usually a fraction of the snow loading capacity of roofs in Canada and in the northern United States. Regardless, SolPowered performs a certified structural analysis in all situations where loading is a concern.
In addition to large commercial and industrial solar PV systems, SolPowered also offers full turnkey solutions for smaller installations of 10kW or less for qualified applicants under the Ontario Power Authority’s microFIT Program.
